Description

Uncertainty quantification is key for achieving validated predictive computations in a wide range of scientific and engineering applications.  The field relies on a broad range of mathematics and statistics groundwork, with associated algorithmic and computational development. This conference strives to bring together an interdisciplinary mix of mathematicians, statisticians, scientists, and engineers with an interest in development and implementation of uncertainty quantification methods.  The goal of the meeting is to provide a forum for the sharing of ideas, and to enhance communication among this diverse group of technical experts, thereby contributing to future advances in the field.

From the latest issue of Physics Today, about the difficulty of communicating scientific results to general public.

Terms that have different meanings for scientists and the public
***************************************************************************************

Scientific term         * Public meaning                                * Better choice
***************************************************************************************
enhance                      * improve                                          * intensify, increase
positive trend              * good trend                                     * upward trend
positive feedback       * good response, praise                * vicious cycle, self-reinforcing cycle
theory                            * hunch, speculation                      * scientific understanding
uncertainty                   * ignorance                                      * range
error                              * mistake, wrong, incorrect            * difference from exact true number
bias                               * distortion, political motive           * offset from an observation
sign                               * indication                                       * plus or minus sign
values                           * ethics, monetary value                * numbers, quantity
manipulation               * illicit tampering                              * scientific data processing
scheme                        * devious plot                                   * systematic plan
anomaly                       * abnormal  occurence                  * change from long-term average
The question to debate would be to determine who should adapt for better communication.
In school, the teachers should always obtain and apply the latest terminology from science and
perhaps explain with popular language but insist on the application of the proper terms.
In newspapers, it is quite understanbale that they should write with popular language
in order to be understood by the largest numbers, altough they should fall into vulgarity
(eliminating all tabloids which do not use proper language). This also means that in our intervention
with newspapers, we are the ones who should adapt and write with general language.
After all, we do want to be understood by the public and not maintain a cloud of elitism around us.
However, comes the question of what is appropriate language for journal publication.
Sometimes, I feel that too many journals have started to increase the level of expectations.
I have seen many cases where the authors were writing good English, some associate editors decided
that they wanted better language to the point where they were refering to English proofing services
of course offered by their publishers and definitely unaffordable to most researchers.
I hope that we are not falling into some kind of force vending schemes to extract more monies from
already underfunded research projects (being the majority of projects, by the way).
Best regards
Luc Rolland
