maybe you are an OpenOffice, StarOffice, Firefox or even GIMP user or if you work on LINUX, you know well the benefits of the wealth of open source software such as xfig. You realize that the majority of open-source software is free, easy to install, highly customizable and easily integrated with existing systems and they are usually developped for MAC OS-X as well as Windows XP (I do not recommend Vista being of so bad quality).

In addition, because many open-source software products benefit from vast communities of developers and especially researchers, open source can offer operational and support benefits when compared with expensive, proprietary software where the help line are cut the minimum and you have to wait in line for very long times.  This even more true as the software price is goes down.
