As of last week, along with a local Cypriot industrial partner, I have commenced a project on the design of a new generation of solar trackers applying parallel manipulators.
The project is part of a general initiative of our Laboratory on Renewable Energy to investigate ways to improve energy harnessing on the unlimited energy resource found here in Cyprus, namely the sun. The actual solar panels are installed on water heaters and they feature a fixed frame and hence are almost never optimally oriented towards the sun. The same can be said about the photovoltaic panels which are commencing to appear here en there since their price is fortunately going down with mass production.
Observing the still limited energy production, I have commenced research about Solar Panel enhancers with solar concentration devices and parallel mechanisms.
I already have a Master’s degree contender who is working on the subject of enhancers with solar concentration devices in two distinct areas since the PV solar panels do not operate in the same EM wavelengths as thermal solar ones.
I am now looking for Master’s and PhD degree students to design new generations of 2 and 3 DOF parallel robot for solar tracking. These will be quickly tried on deployable electricity production mobile units which are very popular in Cyprus since the remoteness of some secondary houses and installations.
