Abel Prize 2009 awarded to Mikhail Gromov of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques

Dear all,

the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has decided to award the Abel Prize for 2009 to the now French mathematician Mikhail Leonidovich Gromov for “his revolutionary contributions to geometry”. He has been involved in impressive research in mathematics confirming the position of France as a leader in theoritical research. One can only salute the amount of freedom and independance the researchers used to have in the French research institutes up to recently.

The Abel Prize recognizes contributions of extraordinary depth and influence to the mathematical sciences and has been awarded annually since 2003.
